QUESTION:
What is the best free blog I could use to start up an online business selling handmade jewelery?
I would like to sell some handmade accessories like beaded necklaces and bracelets, so I think its a good idea to have good quality pictures to show my stuff. Any idea what is a good blog platform? WordPress? Blogspot? Or anything else? It needs to be user friendly cos I'm quite of a computer idiot.
-
ANSWER:
If you want to sell your handmade jewellery www.etsy.com is a good site to use although they do not have a blog and there is a small charge.Problem with putting your jewellery to sell on a blog for free you aren't going to get much traffic and the paying aspect will be a problem. You could also use www.artfire.com and this can be linked to a facebook page for your jewellery.
You could always do the free blog thing on the side but if you want to sell the blog isn't the best place.
Also make sure you price your jewellery correctly, many people charge too little.

QUESTION:
What is the best way to sell handmade beaded jewelry?
I make jewelry with beads and twisted wire. I have sold a few pieces but I mostly make pieces as gifts for friends and family. I tried selling a few necklaces on Ebay but they never sold. Does anyone have advice on how to sell handcrafted jewelry? Thanks!-
ANSWER:
I like going to the markets... there are sure to be craft markets somewhere in your area. However, you could always try leaving some on consignment at a trendy boutique whose outfits you think your jewellery would complement. Just make sure you do it with receipts and an agreed method of payment in writing.Look for the right are, one where there are varied boutiques, cafes, maybe hairdressers and an area that attracts the right crowd. The best form of advertising is to actually wear your own jewellery. It's amazing how often someone will ask where you got it. best of luck.

QUESTION:
How do you best price your handmade jewelry for a fast sell and profit?
all handmade by me, materials, price of, and time spent on vary greatly. also, there is transportation and display costs. an example of what i sell is : 16 inch onyx and black agate necklace with a teardrop mother of pearl pendant, 18 inch 3 strand turquoise colored seed beaded necklace with a handmade one of a kind 30mm sterling silver dolphin and hoop pendant. both took about 2.4 hours to make.-
ANSWER:
Normally, price is associated with quality, especially when it comes to handmade jewelry. You don't want to price your jewelry too low because people will think maybe something's wrong with it. Fast sell and good profit are almost like oxymorons when it comes to jewelry. A lot of time and money goes into making it, so don't underprice your jewelry. Of course, this means it might not sell as fast. You can calculate both wholesale and retail price. Labor is the amount you want to pay yourself per hour. Depending on your experience it can be anywhere from and up per hour. A common pricing formula is the following.
Wholesale price = (Materials X 2) + (labor X # of hours)
Retail price = wholesale price X 1.50(50% markup)The markup over the wholesale price can be as high or as low as you want but 50% is pretty common. The display and transportation costs cannot be part of the price since those are business expenses. You have to markup your jewelry to the extent that the price will cover all your expenses plus leave you with a decent profit.

QUESTION:
Where to sell handmade beaded jewelry - flea markets?
I have been making a lot of beaded jewelry lately and I have given some as gifts. My friends and family think that it is really good work and that I should try to sell it. But, I don't know where... I was thinking of trying the local flea market (which is visited my many every weekend) in my area but I don't know how much luck I would have there. I am not really interested in trying to sell online. I've made cute tags and priced my jewelry at -6 earrings, -9 bracelets, -12 necklaces - are those reasonable? Once I know that I can make money I can buy more expensive materials and create even greater pieces. would love to profit from my new hobby so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
You didn't say where you live or what sorts of outlets are available to you.If you live near a resort area or a tourist attraction, there are sure to be shops that sell local crafts that target the tourists and visitors. Find some of those shops that sell similar items. Check out the packaging and the prices and figure out which one(s) are a good "fit" for your goods. Take a sampling and talk to the manager. You may be able to arrange an outright sale, but more likely you will be able to work out a consignment deal. Often there is a standard for your area; a 60/40 split is fairly standard in my area.
If there is not, but there is an active Farmer's Market within your travel range, check out how well your product will fit into that market. The regional Farmer's Market in my state has two weekends a year that they encourage crafts sales, but they will sell you a booth year 'round. Some of the people who have year-round booths will also take crafts on consignment, which might be a good arrangement for you. Our local Farmer's Market is open on Saturdays only, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., and there are several people who set up to sell similar items to yours. Some of them are there every week; some, one weekend a month. The ones who actually work on their crafts while manning their booths naturally attract more traffic.
Nearly every place in the country has some sort of "festival" circuit. Within an hour's drive of me there are azalea festivals, strawberry festivals, blueberry festivals, festivals for seafood in general and specific fish and shellfish in particular, collard festivals, tulip festivals, chrysanthemum festivals, chili festivals, a chocolate festival, and some I can't even think of right now. Each of those festivals sells on-the-street booths for crafts sales for 1, 2, or 3 days. There are Christmas shows, women's shows, and other similar events that will sell booths. Look into trying at least a few of them, particularly if they attract a wide variety of crafts or you have some other tie-in (earrings that look like strawberries? or crabs?).
Now: If the flea market is the *only* outlet available to you, then that question is settled. However, keep in mind that people don't go to flea markets looking for the perfect gift for Cousin Sue's birthday or graduation, they go looking for bargains. Many will consider bargaining to be part of the transaction and will try to talk you down to your lowest possible price.
You also need to know something about the tax laws in your state. In my state, you would be responsible for collecting state and county sales tax and remitting it to the state quarterly. If you sell wholesale or on consignment to shops, *they* take care of the sales tax issue.

I would put them up at .99 and see how high it goes. What are you selling them for now at the beauty salon? Ebay does not bring a lot for homecrafted jewelry, but you could try. These things sell well at events that have seller booths and at art and crafts fair.
They are very very nice and I hope you do well selling them!

QUESTION:
Where do Peruvian artisians buy there raw materials for making jewelry such as earrings and necklaces?
My friend at work just went there and brought back beautiful jewelry that was crafted there. It was all handmade, even the"loops" for connecting a piece together. I just wondered where they bought there silver wire and beads from. I mean, I don't think they are buying already-to-finish parts from an AC Moore!-

Local mines, most likely. There are plenty of them in that area. They either send the refined metal to a metalworker who makes pieces to specification, or send it straight to the jewler who has been trained in metalworking.

QUESTION:
Would anyone buy handmade jewerly by a teen?
I am 12 years old, and I desperately need to make money, and this is all I can think of. I have a whole bead kit, and i'm pretty good at making necklaces. I was planning on putting up catchy fliers in the neighborhood and telling them to call my cell if they were interested. That way they could tell me how they want it made or something, and I can ride my bike over there. Also, if you have a different idea, please please tell me. (I'm good at writing poetry and fiction stories!)-
ANSWER:
Wow I'm impressed that someone so young is interested in starting their own business! I think it could definitely be successful because someone at my work (I work in an office) was selling home-made jewellery recently, giving the proceeds to charity. Have you thought about setting up a stall somewhere, like at a community event? I would have said church but it's probably considered immoral to use church premises to make money!

QUESTION:
Selling "handmade" on Etsy?
If I put together a necklace with a charm I bought from a commercial bead seller (something like http://www.fusionbeads.com/shop/product/6340/ for example) and I added beads and chain (also pre made) into my own design, would I still be able to sell it on Etsy, or do I have to make metal charms, etc myself?
What about artist beads? Could I sell something using items from http://www.fusionbeads.com/shop/category/5/artist_handmade_beads/ as long as I don't claim I made them myself?-
ANSWER:
Constructing jewelry (or miniatures, as I do) using other people's work as raw material is allowed, as long as the crafting of the finished piece is done by you. As a courtesy, I give credit to people that make my materials for me, if I can. So when I weave a miniature basket using a hand-turned wooden base, I say the base was turned by Philip Hauser, a local wood turner, in my description.

QUESTION:
Will women buy handmade jewelry made by just some “boy next door” like me?
Is it strange? My girlfriend and I are “rock hounds”. I know she loves certain stones. We both can identify minerals by sight. I decided to buy her some natural stone bead necklaces, ear-rings, etc. The cost was very high for those made with quality natural stone beads.
On a recent trip to China, I saw every kind of bead you could imagine. Some were dyed, or fake, but many were clearly natural stones. Some were costly others were not. I purchased enough to make about 10 necklaces (about worth). I made her some jewelry. She loved them. I started making them for her, and some other female friends since last November. They loved them. Some of my drinking buddies asked me to make them for their girlfriends.
We know a girl that has a boutique. She wants to sell them in her store. She is only asking 15%.
-
ANSWER:
Not strange at all..."We know a girl that has a boutique. She wants to sell them in her store. She is only asking 15%."
Make sure when you sell on "consignment" you have a firm written agreement to protect you and your inventory, clear payment terms including WHEN you will be paid.
Make sure you get deposit or prepay for customer orders from your customers (aka drinking buddies). and LEAVE in a cushion of money for mishaps refunds, etc.
and have fun..
BUT I caution you do not invest too much and don't expect to get rich. Think small. When you sell something (and get paid) use that money for more inventory.

Word Problem?
Beads by Donna had a sale on handmade necklaces and bracelets. Beads by Donna sold 32 necklaces and bracelets. The necklaces were sold for and bracelets for . The total sales came to 0. How many of each were sold? What was the total sales for each? This was witten for a math class by me. I know the answer lets see if you do!!!
-
ANSWER:
necklaces = n
bracelets = b
b + n = 32
8b + 20n = 460n = 32 - b
8b + 20(32 - b) = 460
8b + 640 - 20b = 460
- 12b = 460 - 640
-12b = -180
b = 180/12
b = 15n = 32 - b
n = 32 - 15
n = 17
n(17 * 20) + b(15 *
= $ 460Answer: The total sales for each came to 0, for necklaces and $ 120, for bracelets.

QUESTION:
Can you sell bracelets, necklaces, etc. if you don't make your own beads?
Like, if you buy the beads from other places, but make the jewelry , can you sell it still? I don't think so, but I'm not sure and it's alwaays been one of those weird things that just bothers me not knowing. Does anyone have experience selling handmade jewelry that can tell me?-
ANSWER:
It all depends on exactly what kind of beads you're talking about. If you are talking about one-of-a-kind handmade lampworked beads made by an artisan, you probably shouldn't sell them without their creator's specific permission. If, on the other hand, you are talking about beads that have been mass-produced and purchased in quantity (like from Fire Mtn or Michaels or wherever) then you certainly can sell your own creations made with purchased beads. Don't copy someone else's pattern and try to sell that, of course.

QUESTION:
How much should I sell my handmade polymer beads for?
I just starting a few weeks ago making them, I love them. I have asked my friends and my family but their answers just don't satisfy me. Not because it's too cheap or too expensive it's just I want the right price. The more and more I read into this the more and more disappointed I am because most likely I will be selling them less then I want. Because I do spend a lot of time on them, and that's exactly what I have been learning is my worse enemy.Tell me my your opinion. Either base it off of your expertize or what you would honestly buy my stuff for. The link for my photos will be below. You can be honest just please don't be mean. No reason to hurt my feelings. If you think you spend no more then so much on something tell me.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62843038@N08/Now based on supplies, if that is the way to go... it totally defers. Now before I even got up and going to make things I spent about at least 150 dollars. That's on clay and tools. Now average price of clay is 1.50 to 2.00 dollars for every 2 ounces. Just a bracelet probably just takes half to 3/4 of that. A necklace though, takes triple that, about 3 ounces. Keep in mind though, the necklaces so far I have made are chokers, their not very long, their snug on your neck but still comfortable. I just don't have a lot of supply of just one color yet, I got a sample kit and I would not have the colors I wanted to make a longer necklace, but I'm sure something like that would take about 5 ounces of clay.
And I'm sure you wont need to add this to the conclusion but I do roughly spend about 2-4 hours per project. It's getting better though I have learned the more I make at one time, the better for time. That's the whole process from conditioning the clay, to baking, and stringing it.
I think that's it. I hope you find my beads worthy of at least a few bucks
-
ANSWER:
In my opinion, the best way to go is calculate what your putting in. make sure your getting the money back from buying supplies, plus you need to be getting something for time put in. say 5 dollars extra for every hour it took to make for example.
then of course, it depends on competitors. you dont want to put a price for something when someone else is selling for cheaper. you always want to set up a pricing system beforehand otherwise you will start to think that it should be worth less or more. stick with the same system so that people wont strat to think your cheating them

QUESTION:
Any advice on what to name my non-profit business selling handmade jewelry ?
I would like some suggestions on what to name my charity business. Here are the points about my business that are important in choosing the name:
--100% of profits from all sales will be donated to an eye hospital in south India
--jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets) will be made from semiprecious gemstone beads and silver and will be handcrafted by me.Here are the ideas I have so far, but none of them satisfy me. I would like the name to be shorter and catchier. Let me know what you think of these or suggest others!
--Pretty Visions Jewelry
--Gift of Sight Jewelry-
ANSWER:
The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name's originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance. The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...
I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.
I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.
Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.
There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

QUESTION:
Not sure what to charge for handmade jewelry?
I have decided to start making and selling bracelets and necklaces for babies, older kids, and adults. I haven't done this before but have looked at postings on youtube, gotten books from the library, looked at other peoples work and gotten advice from a few people that make jewelry at my church. Materials I would be using are beading wire, glass beads, stone beads, wood beads, and Swarovski crystals. Some of the pieces I have already done are made with glass beads and swarovski crystals. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what to sell them for though and was wondering what you would be willing to pay for handmade jewelry. What to charge for Bracelets?
What to charge for Necklaces?
What to charge for Matching Sets (Bracelet and Necklace)?-

ANSWER:
You don't say what you want the beads to be made from or what you want them to look like. For example, they could be made from polymer clay, air-dry clay, glass, metal, wood, paper, etc., and they could be round balls, tubes, flat spacer beads, and colored, carved, flat, metallic, etc, etc.If you're interested in making beads from polymer clay, I've seen them on hemp necklaces and polymer clay beads can be made any shape, size, color, pattern, etc. you want. Check out these pages at my site for loads of info and lessons on making polymer clay beads and jewelry:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/beads.htm
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/beads-holes.htm
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/jewelry.htm
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/pendants_cording.htm
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/wire.htmAs for peace signs, those could be created on polymer clay beads by making a "cane" of that image then applying a slice from that cane to a raw clay bead shape... or they could be "sculpted" by shaping two teardrops (black and white), cutting out a circular core and replacing with a tiny snake of the other color or painting a dot on, then nesting the two shapes together... or they could be painted onto baked clay... or an image of a peace sign could be made into a "transfers" for clay beads, etc., etc.
As for tie-dye, there are steps you can take to help set the color and to preserve it somewhat, but basically you'd probably just need to buy the right kind of dye (e.g., Procion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procion) and mordant, etc., instead of the type you may be using.

QUESTION:
Circle of Life, Navajo Necklace?
A few years ago my family went to Canyon de Chelly, we took a jeep tour and my sister and I took a horseback riding tour. During the jeep tour we stopped at the Navajo vendors. I bought a necklace with the main bead being a bird inside a silver, hallow circular bead. The maker told me it meant the Circle of Life. I loved it, but recently it broke and i am unable to ind all the pieces. Does anyone know how I can get a handmade necklace like this made with the same beauty? I would love to be able to get one form the same vendors, but that seems impossible since I live in PA.-
ANSWER:
Dang, I wish you'd posted this last month, I just got back from visiting my father on the reservation. Can you email me a photo of the necklace, clear enough to see the pieces, and with a ruler in the photo to show scale? I'll see if I recognize the maker, or at least where to get the beads. Were the ladies part of the Antelope Trail co-op? I can contact them easily if they were.

QUESTION:
Hannukah gift idea? Is this a good gift?
Ok, I'm on a budget. So I'm doing handmade gifts for the holidays. One of my close friends is Jewish, so I'm thinking I'll make her a beaded necklace with a silver Star of David pendant for her Hannukah gift. Her favorite colors are blue and pink. I'm thinking for the beads 4mm blue and clear Swarovzki crystals (which I can get a good deal on at a certian website, they're about for a package of 144, which is a really cheap for Austrian crystal beads) or maybe blue crystals with white freshwater pearls. If I made this necklace, I would probably have enough beads to make more neclaces in the same color scheme and give them to other women on my gift list. Different pendants, of course, but same color scheme.
What do people think of this idea? Is it good? Is it ok to give several women on my gift list similar gifts?
LOL Mary's a mind reader....that's actually the website I'm using.-
ANSWER:
I think that is a wonderful idea.
Along with it give a gift that will last forever. Teach her about her Jewish heritage and the true beauty, privilege and spirituality of being a Jewish woman.http://www.aish.com/

QUESTION:
guys, if your girlfriend did this, would you be insulted, angry or pleased?
i want to give my boyfriend a black rose (artificial) and a handmade necklace with black ribbon, black heart beads and a large black heart pendant. He knows i'm into the Gothic thing and says he doesn't mind.
I want to express my feelings without saying them. Please no immature answers like "give him sex or a blowjob" he already gets that anyway. I know he wont wear the necklace because hes scared of looking gay, but if you received these things would you be insulted, or not wear the necklace but be pleased and keep it?
x-
ANSWER:
while i understand that you are somewhat gothic, he apparently is not. if the best reaction you can hope for is that he will never where it and keep it somewhere...maybe you should rethink your gift. again i understand that it is sentimental and from the heart, but its his birthday...shouldnt you get him something he actually wants...rather then something you like?

QUESTION:
What is the best way to sell my handmade jewelry?
I've discovered I have quite a knack for jewelry making. I go to Michael's and stock up on beads, pendants, chain, etc. then go home and make a ton of necklaces. Occasionally I'll do bracelets or earrings, but I mainly stick to necklaces. I've been told by SO many people that my stuff is great, and that I should try to sell it.I've made a website and listed a few things on eBay, but no luck. And yes, I do understand the whole concept that people aren't just going to stumble onto my website, that I need to link to it or run an advertisement in a local paper or something. I understand that.
How else can I go about selling my jewelry? Should I go to small boutiques in my town and ask if I can set up a small table there with my jewelry and try to work out a deal where they get a percent for each sold item? Should I make business cards with my website address on them and get them out? Should I run an ad for my site in a local paper or magazine? Should I try antique malls (where now a days, they sell just about everything, not just antiques) or try local flea markets? Any ideas will be helpful.
Also, one more idea was just trying to get the word out with friends.
Thanks!
Cassidy-
ANSWER:
Etsy is a hit or miss because there is so much competition. I have sales through my website but I also had some sold in a store. I went there, bought something, noticed they also sold handmade jewelry, and asked if they would be interested in selling mine.Sometimes festival booths are relatively inexpensive so you might want to look into that since it's still festival season. I have business cards too which I also put with the sold pieces when I mail them out.

QUESTION:
I am a kid and I am starting a handmade jewelry business, help?
Please read the whole thing, the question is at the bottom. I want extra money but I don't want to bug anyone for money, especially my parents, they work really hard. My family can make a lot of things like bracelets, earrings, rings, and a lot of stuff. I know how to make bracelets, but not too complicated. Of course I need to learn a little more before I start my business. I am going to ask my grandma to teach me. I have a done a lot of thinking about it. Don't laugh at me but I have a book that tells me kids how to make money. My friend is coming over tomorrow and I want to discuss it with her too and see if she would like to help. I know the store already that I am going to buy all these things from( My parents help me with everything, they are so cool and nice). My question is what are the materials I need to start this, like beads and string. Thanks if you really helped me! Merry Christmas! Oh and before I forget I only want to make bracelets and necklaces.
If you have bad things to say about what I am doing then don't answer.-
ANSWER:
Everyone starts out at the beginning, you're doing the research for it so it should go ok for you.Think who your market is going to be. Adults? Teens? Kids? What price range?
Your materials will cost you something, so will your time. Start out with making one bracelet. Add up how much in beads that was to make, and for string, clasps, anything else that went into making it. And your packaging, if any, how much that costs. Now times that amount by six and that is your base lowest cost to sell it at.
How is your packaging? Zip lock 'snack' size baggies are good with a folded piece of card stock stapled to the top. Printing on it can be done at Office Depot, they're cheaper than Kinkos. They also have colored card stock. Do you need a piece of card stock inside the baggie to show off the jewelry? Does that piece need to have an image printed on it too? Think about your display ideas--the packaging should look nice but not cost much.
Now look at it and think is THAT price too low or too high? What can it sell for, realistically. Is it worth that amount? Will people pay that to you to get it for themselves?
Sometimes you'll be stuck with a design that just doesn't sell. Sometimes you have something that goes ultra fast.
You should check into any of the online Kidpreneur sites, they're for kids who are going to make their own businesses. Good stuff there.

QUESTION:
Lampworking, COE, glass compatibility discern ? my glass rods [canes] got mixed up, how can I tell them apart?
Please Help Me! Glass Lampworking Bead Artists! How can I tell my rods apart? and if I can't, what then?......
I just came across an old container with 'mixed' glass rods [canes] purchased in 2000
I have no idea of their compatibilities, their specific COE's,or which company the came from (Bullseye, Effetre, Spectrum, ect..)
However, I do know the importance of differentiating them, and the results if you don't!
Is it possible, that there was only one company producing glass for lampworking back then, making the compatibility a guarantee?
I am unable to contact the the store (out of business) that they were purchased from and ask which company[s] were their suppliers. If they are different COE's, how can I tell BEFORE I work with it? Is it possible to 'tell' the COE by holding 2 rods in the flame at the same time and see if they melt about the same rate, or the same way?
What if I make a bead with two (or more) of the unknown rods, and then anneal the bead by kiln cooling it? Will that strengthen the bead/glass together?
So far, the only suggestion I've found on-line to tell them apart is by fusing pieces together in a kiln and then examine it under polarized film.
That's just crazy to think about, especially given the amount of rods I have, I mean THIS must happen a lot to people, what the heck does everyone else do?
What can I do, short of using them all for single color simple beads?
I really want to be able to mix and match the rods that I have, and not have to worry that it might explode on impact with someones skin after I give them a handmade necklace as a 'gift' !
OMG, can you imagine? I shudder, obviously not acceptable!
So, please help me if you can!
Thank you so much for reading this!
ps ...and please only answer, if you know. I'm dealing with hot glass here, and mistakes from incorrect advice would really be a bummer! So no joke or guess answers please!

QUESTION:
How much is appropriate to spend on your wedding attendants?
I have been told that I am not spending enough on my bridesmaids for our wedding and I was just wondering what is appropriate... I have already bought them all purses for the day of the wedding. I also handmade them all necklaces, earrings, and a bracelet for the wedding. They are very nice and I have taken many jewelry making classes so they dont look homemade. But I did have to but all the beads and supplies which cost about 0 for all as well as the time to make them. I am paying for their makeup as well. Is that sufficient or do I need to spend more. I have been in several weddings and have not recieved that much from those brides and never thought anything of it until I was planning what to give my girls! PLEASE HELP!
It is my mom that said that... she feels I should give them something besides stuff for the wedding... but the jewelry is all black and clear crystals... so its definitely something they could wear again!
It has nothing to do with the money... I just thought I had done quite a bit for them... And I wasnt sure if something else was necessary.-
ANSWER:
That's more than I have ever gotten. Pretty much all I have received are a few plastic necklaces or a some manicure sets. You're fine.
