Handmade Necklace

Handmade Necklace Design

There are many forms of necklace and it is depends on the individual preference. However, there are some types and design of necklace that are very popular and one of them is handmade necklace. The handmade necklaces are very popular today even though the price is rather expensive if compare to other type of the necklace. The most important characteristic of buying handmade one is that there are variety of selections, unlike to one that produce form the factory and commonly are from the same pattern and design. And the best thing of having handmade necklace is that you even can have your own design. There are many shops that provides service for people who want to have their own necklace design, sometime the price of custom made is a lot more expensive, but it also really worth to buy, especially if you are looking for a gift for someone.

However, in this article, we will focus on how the choose the design of the necklace that suit you the most. Here are some tips and factors that have to be taken into account, and also in general perspective, which you can apply no matter which type of the necklace that you are going to buy. The major concern when you are going to buy a necklace is that the design and material as well as the function (how it fits to you) are very important. Even though it is just a small piece of rope and tighten together or it is an expensive jewellery necklace, you have to consider very carefully.

The other most important thing is that you must try on every one of them that you are interested and want to buy. You just can not only look at the design and material. It is also good for you to know the size of your neck so you can estimate the necklace that you are able to wear. However, there is no guarantee that knowing the size of the neck then you will have a perfect match. You must actually try on and look at it on the mirror. Especially if you wish to wear the necklace to match with some of your cloth, then I would suggest you to wear the cloth when you go to the shop and try on both items and see if they are match to each other as you want.

Sometimes, the length of the necklace does not have to fit to the height of the person or the size of the neck at all. It is really depends on the design and fashion of the necklace itself. Some types of necklace have to wear in long fashion. The length of the necklace has to normally reach the stomach and the one that made from small piece of stone and dyed color is also very popular these days.

Here is just the preliminary guide line for some of you who love to wear necklace. And sometimes many of them just ignore very easy and simple step before take decision. It doesn’t have to be fix in style and preference and the guide line presented above is may be the generic one that you can apply for any type of necklace and in any occasion.

Where can I find a genuine baltic amber necklace handmade in Poland?
I've found several online stores with amber jewelry but I'm looking for genuine Baltic handmade amber jewelry preferably in gold or sterling silver, any suggestions from someone savvy in this subject?

    • ANSWER:
      http://www.nowinska.pl/
try this site, they are in Poland, but they have English menu.
Their jewelry is handmade, and they use different kinds of authentic Baltic amber, but I got to warn you, this stuff is expensive, most likely because it is hand made and the quality of amber if very good.
The other place you can buy is in Poland by the Baltic coast, but I don't think that would be very practical.

  5. QUESTION:
Where to find necklace/bracelet length chains for handmade jewelry?
Where can I find necklace and bracelet length sterling sliver & imitation silver chains (or the kind made of chain linked tiny balls, I don't know what their called)? Also the black, suede-looking kind? Where can I find them all in bulk at a preferably discount price than individually?

If you can tell me where I'll appreciate it SO much, plus the 10 points!

    • ANSWER:
You can get "ball chain" of various thicknesses, in many hardware stores in bulk quantities, with the connectors to fasten the ends.

As far as "real" jewelry suppliers, I have been very happy with Rio Grande. They have been in business for many years, and carry ball chain in both sterling silver and in non-precious metal, as well as many other kinds of necklace cordage. They have quantity discounts, the more of one item you buy the less the per item cost.

While I have not used them as a supplier, some of my friends have been very happy with what they have purchased from Fire Mountain Gems. They also carry the ball chain and cordage that you are looking for, and have a similar quantity discount.

      Good luck

  7. QUESTION:
How much should I be charging for handmade jewelry? I usually charge for a necklace earrings and bracelet.
People seem to like the items I put together but then they always say I am not charging enough. I want to keep the prices affordable.
People are actually buying so many that it is getting hard for me to keep up. I am just afraid that if I charge more I will lose some of my clients. I am using metal, glass, plastic and wood. I usually get the items at a pretty good deal but it is time consuming. And I never make the same piece.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the price of the raw materials, how long you spent making the items, as well as where you're selling them. Some places you'll want to sell them at , but if you're selling them at an area where you can mark the price up by , then by all means do so.

Are these people actually buying your stuff or are they just oohing & ahhing over it? If all they're doing is looking & maybe buying one object, then I wouldn't worry about the prices. While I'm sure they mean it, a lot of times people say stuff like that to sound nice.

  14. QUESTION:
How do you best price your handmade jewelry for a fast sell and profit?
all handmade by me, materials, price of, and time spent on vary greatly. also, there is transportation and display costs. an example of what i sell is : 16 inch onyx and black agate necklace with a teardrop mother of pearl pendant, 18 inch 3 strand turquoise colored seed beaded necklace with a handmade one of a kind 30mm sterling silver dolphin and hoop pendant. both took about 2.4 hours to make.

    • ANSWER:
Normally, price is associated with quality, especially when it comes to handmade jewelry. You don't want to price your jewelry too low because people will think maybe something's wrong with it. Fast sell and good profit are almost like oxymorons when it comes to jewelry. A lot of time and money goes into making it, so don't underprice your jewelry. Of course, this means it might not sell as fast.

You can calculate both wholesale and retail price. Labor is the amount you want to pay yourself per hour. Depending on your experience it can be anywhere from and up per hour. A common pricing formula is the following.

      Wholesale price = (Materials X 2) + (labor X # of hours)
Retail price = wholesale price X 1.50(50% markup)

The markup over the wholesale price can be as high or as low as you want but 50% is pretty common. The display and transportation costs cannot be part of the price since those are business expenses. You have to markup your jewelry to the extent that the price will cover all your expenses plus leave you with a decent profit.

    • ANSWER:
honestly? i dont like any of them at all. so i wouldnt pay anything for them

the first couple are just weird, and the last few longer ones look like you just braided a bunch of yarn and stuck a flower on it. if i wanted to look like i was wearing braided yarn, i could go get a bunch from a craft store for like, two dollars.

like, yeah they are handmade and all, so i know they are going to look a little rough, but what was the rush to get them done in a week? some of them look like they are about to fall apart.

im sorry, i just dont like any of them, they wouldnt match even one single thing i wear, and if i really wanted one i could probably make it for cheaper than you would charge me

edit: ok, someone else said it first, so now i dont feel bad saying it. they do look tribal. the very first thing i thought of when i saw them is those african tribesmen who wear the red sarong things and those big colorful neck things. i have nothing against those dudes, they are down there doing their thing or whatever, but even their necklaces look better and they live in a dessert with no craft stores to speak of

edit again: i showed my boss and she said the first ones look like part of a costume, and the second longer ones look like a scarf got shrunk in the wash

  18. QUESTION:
How can I sell my Handmade Hemp Necklaces?
I've created some hemp necklaces of my own. I carved my own beads out of cherry wood , and handpainted them myself. I found the seashells on the Pacific Ocean shore. Now after all that work, I'm not quite sure how to go about selling them. I made a website:

    http://whereinspirationbegins.googlepages.com/home

But i'm unsure of how to get people to come visit it. Maybe someone knows of some free classified ads? Or any other ideas?

  19. QUESTION:
Is the jewelry on hemp necklace store (www.hempnecklacestore.com) handmade and should I order from them?
I was trying to find some handmade, high quality hemp jewelry and I noticed that hemp necklace store (www.hempnecklacestore.com) comes up a lot on the search. I looked at their website, and no where on there does it say that it is handmade. I hope that a non-handmade site would not be the most popular hemp jewelry store. Then again, I can't think of another way to make hemp jewelry other than by hand. Does anyone have some info about this?

    • ANSWER:
I too love handmade eco-friendly jewelry, and I once ordered from hemp necklace store. I found their products to be of very cheap quality and the customer service to be lacking. After doing some research, I learned that they just buy mass produced made in China hemp jewelry and re-sell it. Here is my proof:

      These necklaces - http://www.hempnecklacestore.com/36-flower-hemp-necklaces

are also on this website which is an import site and much cheaper.

and after looking around allfungifts.com you will find that much of the jewelry on hemp necklace store is just bought there and re-sold.

What is the best free blog I could use to start up an online business selling handmade jewelery?
I would like to sell some handmade accessories like beaded necklaces and bracelets, so I think its a good idea to have good quality pictures to show my stuff. Any idea what is a good blog platform? WordPress? Blogspot? Or anything else? It needs to be user friendly cos I'm quite of a computer idiot. :)

    • ANSWER:
If you want to sell your handmade jewellery www.etsy.com is a good site to use although they do not have a blog and there is a small charge.

Problem with putting your jewellery to sell on a blog for free you aren't going to get much traffic and the paying aspect will be a problem. You could also use www.artfire.com and this can be linked to a facebook page for your jewellery.

You could always do the free blog thing on the side but if you want to sell the blog isn't the best place.

Also make sure you price your jewellery correctly, many people charge too little.

How much should I charge for my handmade jewelry?
I make jewelry and I'm going to sell it at my community center's flea market. I'm 14, and I don't use anything expensive when I make my jewelry, no diamonds, real pearls, or anything like that. But, the jewelry does look really nice and I think a lot of people will want to buy it. But I don't know what to price them at.
Could you tell me how much I should price a...
    -necklace
    -bracelet
    -earrings

    Thank you!
Sorry I don't have pictures but I just need an idea.

    • ANSWER:
Obviously, I think you should first work out how much it COST to make each item and start from there. I also think the prices should vary a bit, depending on the size, materials used etc. I don't think people would want to pay too much for handmade jewelery at a market. Maybe you could get £3-£5 for some earrings, £4-£6 for a bracelet and about £6-£8 for a necklace. Obviously I haven't seen your jewelery (some pictures would have helped). Also, you could try making friendship bracelets or something like that for little kids and selling them for like 50p. Alternatively, you could just suggest people make an offer and you could "barter" with them. If it goes well, maybe next time you could make a lot more jewelery aimed at different people and you could try using different materials to make more profit.
Hope this helped and good luck!

  31. QUESTION:
Do I need a business license to sell handmade items online?
I make a lot of crafts... Necklaces, picture frames, sewing, knitting, I paint, sculpt, carve, etc, etc, etc. My question is: Can I sell my handmade items and my art online without needing to have a business license if I use a place like paypal to make transactions?

    • ANSWER:
I'm fairly sure you can. The problem is that you are personally liable, so if (for instance), your picture frame breaks and falls off the wall and lands on their head, they can sue YOU for the damages and take all of your personal assets (like your house or your retirement account.) Now, I don't think it's very likely that that would happen, but the fact is that the possibility does exist. If you incorporate a business (at least with certain kinds of business incorporations), they can't sue you, they can only sue the company--which means they can only take the assets that are in the company's bank account.

A few years ago my family went to Canyon de Chelly, we took a jeep tour and my sister and I took a horseback riding tour. During the jeep tour we stopped at the Navajo vendors. I bought a necklace with the main bead being a bird inside a silver, hallow circular bead. The maker told me it meant the Circle of Life. I loved it, but recently it broke and i am unable to ind all the pieces. Does anyone know how I can get a handmade necklace like this made with the same beauty? I would love to be able to get one form the same vendors, but that seems impossible since I live in PA.

An easier and less expensive way would be to make charms out of polymer clay, which comes in metallic colors. Here's a site that sells molds to form the charms.

  41. QUESTION:
What is the best way to sell handmade beaded jewelry?
I make jewelry with beads and twisted wire. I have sold a few pieces but I mostly make pieces as gifts for friends and family. I tried selling a few necklaces on Ebay but they never sold. Does anyone have advice on how to sell handcrafted jewelry? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I like going to the markets... there are sure to be craft markets somewhere in your area. However, you could always try leaving some on consignment at a trendy boutique whose outfits you think your jewellery would complement. Just make sure you do it with receipts and an agreed method of payment in writing.

Look for the right are, one where there are varied boutiques, cafes, maybe hairdressers and an area that attracts the right crowd. The best form of advertising is to actually wear your own jewellery. It's amazing how often someone will ask where you got it. best of luck.

  42. QUESTION:
How can i make handmade jewelry?
Im sure this question has been asked before, but i have more questions.
What materials do i buy when making those cupcake necklaces?
How much does it cost to buy in bulk?
and where can i buy it from? wal-mart, hobby lobby, michaels, meijer...etc?

If you can answer any of these questions...can you give me a link or instructions on what i do after i have finished... like heating up in oven or whatever youre supposed to do?

    • ANSWER:
Ooh, actually... Walmart has this new section in the store where you can buy kits of combinations of bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, for like around . I just got a couple of kits recently and tried them out. They take patience and a bit of time... but they look great when they're done.

It comes with instructions, all the beads and supplies that you need to make everything it includes. They're actually pretty cool to make, and some of them look like you bought them, and don't look overly cheap. You don't have to use any ovens, or anything.

That particular section in the store also has individual packs of beads, wire, pliers and other supplies that you can purchase to make up your own patterns and create whatever you like. The aisle has like ideas in pamphlets, and pictures of examples in that very aisle, and stuff you can take if you're not overly creative in that department.

I hope you can find the section in the store... they're really fun to make!

      Hope that helps!

  43. QUESTION:
Is it illegal to sell handmade crafts from you car?
Hi, I aspire to sell my handmade jewelry and I am wondering if for a start I could just drive down to Morehead Beach in North Carolina and sell my crafts from the back of my hatch back? I dont know what the legalities are although i tried looking it up havent gotten a good answer yet. I dont have a huge operation going on here just about 2 dozen handmade necklaces and bracelets. Thanks for reading I hope Im able to do this lol.

    -Casey

    • ANSWER:
You will need a license to sell on any beach. also you need more than2 dozen of the items you have made. I would suggest you look for a craft fair or swap meet to start. There you do not need a license because most are for the weekend only. You would rent a table or a spot to set up your own table. going to the beach I would suggest you call the county courthouse in that area. You can also look it up online. Go to North Carolina.gov, Morehead Beach.org,etc.

How much would you pay for EACH of this handmade necklaces?
Hi, well, I've been selling this kind of necklaces, at a local store (beauty salon), and they sell kinda slow, but they sell well, but now I want to sell them online maybe on e-bay, and for now I'm just promoting a few on local classifieds, but I'm so unsure about the prices, because my dad and bf price them so low, and my mom and other girl friends say that they are woth more than that. So I kinda did a research and well It says that I have to ask other people that is not my family their honest opinion, so here are the links to some of the pics of my jewelry...Some neacklaces have real handcrafted crystal beads. So I'll appreciate all of your opinions. Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
These are beautiful!!! I LOVE the third one...put it up and ebay and post the item number!
I would put them up at .99 and see how high it goes. What are you selling them for now at the beauty salon? Ebay does not bring a lot for homecrafted jewelry, but you could try. These things sell well at events that have seller booths and at art and crafts fair.
They are very very nice and I hope you do well selling them!

  47. QUESTION:
I don't have a credit card but I want to sell things online will the below idea work and how?
I want to sell handmade necklaces online but I don't have a credit card ((or bank account)). I mentioned this to my friend who has a debit card. She offered me the use of her card, but I don't know how to do this. Would everything have to be sent to her, would we have to get a paypal account for this? please, ANY advice you have would be great.

    • ANSWER:
No that won't work. She would have to set up a paypal account with her credit card, and then give the proceeds to you. But since you have so many questions, i think you are both probably under-aged to use pay pal legitimately. Go to their web site and read up on how to sign up and use the service.

  48. QUESTION:
Would anyone buy handmade jewerly by a teen?
I am 12 years old, and I desperately need to make money, and this is all I can think of. I have a whole bead kit, and i'm pretty good at making necklaces. I was planning on putting up catchy fliers in the neighborhood and telling them to call my cell if they were interested. That way they could tell me how they want it made or something, and I can ride my bike over there. Also, if you have a different idea, please please tell me. (I'm good at writing poetry and fiction stories!)

    • ANSWER:
Wow I'm impressed that someone so young is interested in starting their own business! I think it could definitely be successful because someone at my work (I work in an office) was selling home-made jewellery recently, giving the proceeds to charity. Have you thought about setting up a stall somewhere, like at a community event? I would have said church but it's probably considered immoral to use church premises to make money!

  49. QUESTION:
What is a good name for someone that makes handmade jewelry?
I want to know what is a catchy, but not crazy name. I am making business cards (for when I send my stuff), everything is done, but I realized I don't have a name. Well, I am making necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. I have no particular style, and my actual name is Raven, So I wanted something to do with my name, but nothing plain like Raven's Designs, or something like that. Thank You!!!

    • ANSWER:
Black. (Raven is also a black hair color.)
      Divine Designs.
      Raven of the Rings.
      Bijoux.

Good luck with your business! :)

Her birthday is on the 23rd of January. What would be an economical way to get the package there on that day (or around that day), without damaging the stuff (specifically the necklace, it's wire and glass beads, pretty fragile.)

    • ANSWER:
Pack your necklace so it wont be bounced around. One of those bubble envelopes should protect it-then just put it in between your other items.I live in Ontario ,too.If your box is packed well-it will be just fine using Canada Post It cost .00 to send a birthday card by Purolator to Nova Scotia>not at all cheap.
